All the way in 64 bit!

okay, brace yourselves. A few months ago, as some of you might recall, I got a new CPU; the shiny new AMD Athlon 64 3200. Just today, I read the greatest headline;
Microsoft Launches Beta for Windows® XP 64-Bit Edition. AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Compatible
This is totally great. I am looking into it right now, but I am just giddy! I’m looking into trying the free 360 day trial(okay, that’s like a year.) right now.

Windows® XP 64-Bit Edition is designed to address the most demanding needs of technical workstation users who require large amounts of memory and floating point performance in areas such as mechanical design and analysis, digital content creation and scientific and high-performance computing applications. Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for 64-Bit Extended Systems is only compatible with AMD Opteron™– and AMD Athlon™ 64 processor-based computers.

Windows Install from Hallifax

My aunt bought Windows XP for her computer. I had agreed to go over to her place this morning around 10:00 and install it for her. I thought that this would be easy since I’ve installed Windows XP at least 10 times. Is it really possible to be sore from a computer upgrade?
I went over there all ready to do the install and get things set up. She had one old hard drive which was her boot drive and was only like 7 or 12 GB and another newer 60gb drive installed as the slave. I thought that the old drive would be too old and small, and so I decided I would just install it on the 60gb and set up the old one as a slave so she could get her files off of it.
You’ve probably figured out from the title that this did not go quite as planned.

Shiny, Pink, and Plays MP3s

yes, that’s right. I got one. I am now the proud owner of a Pink Ipod Mini. It’s very spiffy. I do have far more than 4gb of music, of course, and audio books but I figure that I don’t need to carry my whole library around with me. That’s what my hard drive is for. It’s plenty of space for what I’d want to have with me, though, and I love the tiny size and pretty pinkness of it. I’ve named mine Posy.

Gmail Dreaming – Hotmail tries

Last night I had this weird dream that for some reason google went crazy and gave me a ridiculesly large number of gmail invites. I want to say it was like 120. It was really strange. Speaking of Gmail, it seems that Hotmail has finally responded. They are upgrading all of their free accounts to 250mb, and their premium paid service to 2gb. However, they still freeze and delete the files from your free account if you don’t log in every 30 days, and they’re not upgrading everyone at once. They’re doing it gradually starting in July, with the paid accounts first. I’ve been wondering what hotmail would do to respond. It’s not just the space that makes Gmail so well liked, for one thing it’s because it’s Google, and Google is the web. The interface of Gmail is just so well done. The whole service is phenomenal. Google seems to do everything right. search, ads, email. I wouldn’t be surprised if they came out with, like, an IM feature some time and did it really well.

AMD is to Intel as Google is to Yahoo

We all know that gmail is the new dollar, google is the web, and yahoo is trying to hold on. In a similar manner we have AMD. We know that AMD has had their 64bit processors out for a while. I know for certain because I’ve been running one perfectly well for over a week now. AMD announced that they are coming out with dual core processors next year, ahead of Intel who I just read, discontinued work on to other chips including their continuation of their Pentium chip to focus on a dual core chip. I apologize to any Intel fans(do they exist?) but my opinion is that they’ll be getting burried in not too long. It would probably take the general public longer to pick up on this, but like Google, I think AMD will take over.

Yahoo Email up to 100mb

I read this today and found it pretty amusing. I logged into my old yahoo account and while the quota was alot better, the interface wasn’t much changed, and it of course, was nothing compared to the Gmail experience I’ve been enjoying recently. I love the interface and the collapsed conversasion-style reply method. It’s practically made me abandon my POP3 accounts. And I actually like the google ads, because when I email a friend about chinese food, I get lots of chinese food links, and it’s nice and unobtrusive and amusing. I wonder what hotmail’s going to do in response to gmail?

Processor Land

Today, I was browsing online for what processor I would like to get when I am able to upgrade. As some of you know, I am a total AMD girl. I would love to have an Athlon 64 FX. Super Cool. The coolest processor ever. Unfortunately, it’s like $700. So I think that I would like an Athlon 64, probably a 3200+

Of course, I’d need a new motherboard, but I haven’t decided about that yet. Gotta choose the processor first!

I can see my house…

someone on userfriendly.org posted that they could see their house from space at this website.

I checked it out, and I can see my house. there were two versions; one from 70-something, and another from 1995. I was a little sad that I couldn’t zoom in anymore, though. If I go a little to the left, I can see the elementary school I attended.

I wanted to find something bigger I knew to look at, so I looked for my church… unfortunately I don’t know the street address, and had trouble finding it just with the street name. So I found Disneyland. It was a ’95 photo, and the first view was pretty far away, but I could recognize it right away. I was able to recognize the Hub, the river, space mountain, the carousel, and even backstage landmarks like main issue cast costuming.

This is 1995 so we’re… post-splash mountain… post-toontown… I think pre- Indiana Jones, and pre-new tomorrowland.
basically we’re talking late disney afternoon Disneyland. Easily recognized are The Hub, The River, the carousel for Fantasyland, and main street. and my personal favorite, Space Mountain.
