- 8 oz macaroni or shell pasta
- 2tb butter
- 8 slices American cheese
- 1/2 tb onion powder
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- Salt
- Pepper
- Cook macaroni according to directions on package. Drain and leave in colander.
- In the same pot, add the butter, American cheese, onion powder, sour cream, and milk.
- Stir constantly over medium heat until cheese is melted and creamy.
- Add the cheddar cheese and stir until melted.
- Return macaroni to the pot and mix with cheese sauce.
- Salt and pepper to taste.
Variation: Add some ranch dressing mix. The first time I made this I used the end of a container of sour cream that had been made into ranch and green onion dip. This gave it an additional ranch flavor. I made it again to measure everything but made it straight. My husband preferred the ranch variation and thought the basic version had a strong sour cream aftertaste. I didn’t notice this, but he doesn’t like sour cream.
